Ep- 01: The Ultimate Halal Gyudon (Japanese Beef Bowl)
Welcome to Season 2: Taste of Japan – The Halal Recipe Series
If you live in Japan, you see it on almost every street corner: the famous Japanese beef bowl, known as Gyudon. Popularized by major fast-food chains, this steaming bowl of thinly sliced beef and sweet onions simmered in a rich savory sauce over rice is the ultimate Japanese comfort food.
Unfortunately, for Muslims, walking into a local Gyudon shop isn't an option. The beef used is not Halal, and the signature sauce relies heavily on mirin (sweet rice wine) and sake (alcohol).
But living a strict Halal lifestyle doesn't mean you have to miss out on this iconic dish! Kicking off our new recipe series, we are going to show you how to make a 100% Halal, incredibly delicious Japanese beef bowl right in your own kitchen. The secret? It all comes down to using the right beef.
The Secret to Perfect Gyudon: Fresh Sliced Beef
In Gyudon, the beef is the star of the show. You cannot use thick, tough cuts or low-quality frozen meat if you want an authentic texture. You need very thinly sliced, fresh beef with a good balance of lean meat and fat so it practically melts in your mouth when simmered.
Because we hand-slaughter and process our animals ourselves at Al Modina Halal Food, we guarantee that our fresh Halal beef is not only pure for your Aakhirat, but also perfectly prepared for Japanese cooking. We slice our fresh beef to the exact thinness required for the perfect Gyudon.
Ingredients You Will Need
(Serves 2 People)
The Main Ingredients:
-
300g Al Modina Fresh Sliced Halal Beef (Our thinly sliced beef is perfect for this!)
-
1 Large White Onion (thinly sliced)
-
2 Bowls of Steamed Japanese Short-Grain Rice
The Halal Gyudon Sauce:
-
4 Tablespoons Halal Soy Sauce (Ensure it contains no added alcohol)
-
3 Tablespoons Sugar (This replaces the sweetness of the mirin)
-
1 Cup Water (or Halal Beef/Chicken Broth for extra flavor)
-
1 Teaspoon Grated Fresh Ginger
-
1 Clove of Garlic (minced, optional but highly recommended)
Step-by-Step Cooking Instructions
Step 1: Sauté the Onions Heat a little bit of cooking oil in a medium-sized frying pan over medium heat. Add your thinly sliced onions and cook them for about 5 minutes until they become soft, translucent, and slightly sweet.
Step 2: Create the Sauce Pour the water (or broth), Halal soy sauce, sugar, grated ginger, and minced garlic directly into the pan with the onions. Stir well and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
Step 3: Add the Fresh Halal Beef Once the broth is simmering gently, carefully lay your slices of Al Modina Fresh Halal Beef into the pan. Because the beef is sliced beautifully thin, it will cook very fast!
Step 4: Simmer to Perfection Let the beef and onions simmer together in the sauce for about 5 to 7 minutes. The natural fats from the fresh beef will render into the sauce, creating that signature rich, savory flavor. Skim off any foam that rises to the top to keep the broth clean.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy! Scoop a generous portion of steamed rice into a deep bowl. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to place the cooked beef and onions over the rice. Finally, spoon some of that rich, sweet-and-savory beef broth right over the top so it soaks into the rice.
(Optional garnish: Top with pickled red ginger, a dash of chili flakes, or a soft-boiled egg!)
